The Rocky Road AheadIt’s finally over. Yusuf Raza Gilani has won the race for the Prime Minister’s seat, and if all goes as predicted, will be sworn in on the 24th of March.

But its not going to be smooth sailing ahead for the new government. The country is facing economic and judicial crises, which will not be resolved in a day. Even if the Parliament restores the deposed judges back to the pre-November 3rd position, the judiciary will enter into a battle with the Presidency. More worrying than anything else though is the question: will President Musharraf take a backseat from running this country with an iron fist and let the newly elected Parliament rule instead?

On the other hand, the economic crisis is threatening to plunge the country into chaos. There is massive loadshedding, and fuel costs have gone through the roof after the raise in the global oil prices. Pakistan’s debts have also gone increased at an alarming rate, and with suicide bombings now a matter of routine, foreign investment in the country is dwindling down to a trickle.

Despite the rosy promises made by PPP, PML-N and the ANP, it is not going to be an easy task to steer the country out of this storm. And what perhaps is more worrying is that the masses will want instant relief, which unfortunately for them and the new government, cannot take place overnight. One must remember that if it had not been for the flour shortage crisis, the PML-Q would have been in power. Similar crises can and perhaps will shake the foundations of the next government. It is in times like these that the new government must remember that the country may forgive you your massive corruption and kickback scandals, but it will not forgive you for depriving them access to the basics of life: justice, food, clothing and shelter.

After each war there is a little less democracy to save. So, the civil war like preconditions in Pakistan are gonna be a matter of past. I, being an Indian, wish all my friends across the border an era of peace, progress, and contentment; and the leaders should make their best possible efforts to restore democracy.

Yousuf Raza Gilani, 58, is a former Pakistani parliamentary speaker, who has the luck to become next Pakistani PM. He has the man who spent five years in jail. He has the qualification that he was one of the most loyal followers of Benazir Bhutto. And he is very close to Asif Ali Zardari. Both were in jail at the same time during Pervez Musharraf's regime.

He is a good choice to sit in the chair of PM in Pakistan. He is from a less elitist background than other PPP leaders so for Zardari he would likely be a safe hands to transfer the power after 90 days.

Yousuf Raza Gilani is a non-vindictive politician who firmly believes in the superiority of the party. He is the fit man to lead the country. His humbleness is the best quality, Zardari did right thing..

Yousuf Raza Gilani is great leader. He has suffered a lot for the restoration of democracy in the country. He is a very humble man and an experienced politician who would abide by Zardari’s wishes and would silently vacate the seat for Zardari.

Four candidates were in the race to become the Prime Minister of the country –Amin Fahim, Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Yousuf Raza Gillani. The names of Dr. Azra Fazal and Syed Naveed Qamar were in the race but the first four leaders were in the run. Guilani won the race due to his down to earth attitude.

Yousuf Raza belongs to an influential family of Multan and his father was descendant of Syed Musa Pak, who was the leading spiritual figure of Multan. They had hailed from Iranian province of Gilan. One of sisters of Gillani's mother is the wife of Pir Pagara. He has great family background.

@ Farhan, you are wrong in saying he is not so clean politician in Pakistan. He is better than other contenders race for the post of PM. When he was in jail, his imprisonment was widely condemned across the country. He used the time in jail and wrote a book and the book was well received across the country.

Yousuf Raza Gilani is journalist by profession and politician by chance. Now, he is ready to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan by luck because he was loyal to Benazir Bhutto and now he is great supporter of Zardari. He and his family has no link with Musharraf and any of his aides.

@ Mayorga, Are you originally from Pakistan, I think you don't know the family background of Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gillani. Gilani is not politician by chance, he started his political career in 1978. It was the year when his father Makhdoom Alamdar Hussain Gillani. Hi father was one of the signatory to the resolution of Pakistan.

You are right Farhan, Gilani is from a very political and religious family of Multan. He had joined the Muslim League's Central Working Committee in his initial phase of his political career and later joined the Muslim League. He finally joined PPP when Mohammed Khan Junejo's government was dismissed. Since then he has been with PPP as one of the biggest loyalist of Bhutto family.

Gilani's grandfather Makhdoom Ghulam Mustafa Shah Gillani and paternal Uncle Makhdoom Raza Shah Gillani were MLAs at the time of independence. He is not the politician by chance but a by birth politician.

Let me add some more facts here about Gilani's political career and his family background. Yousuf Raza Gillani's great grandfather Makhdoom Raja Bakhsh Gillani was the Mayor of Multan in 1921. He was also the member of the Central Legislative Assembly of India before Independence from British rule and he remained as the member of the Assembly from 1921 to 1936, when he died. He was also known as the father of the Indian Assembly at that time.

I am very happy for Gilani that he will take oath for the chair of Prime Minister of Pakistan. He has a clean image in Pakistani politics. I am sure he is not afraid to lead the country and he knows the way to handle adverse situation.

No need to be happy for this person, Gilani because the headline says it all. Everyone in Pakistan knows Gilani would be a stand-in until Zardari could run for the post. Zardari cannot fulfil his dream to become PM of Country because he did not contest for a parliamentary seat. He will definitely contest a by-election just to win the seat and to qualify to become the next PM.

I guess Nwawz Sharif would definitely demand more soaps for his party after the formation of the government in Pakistan. AND I doubt Gilani has the ability to handle Musharraf, Nawaz Shairf and expectations and guidances of Zardari. Hw will have to be puppet PM..a tough job indeed.

First it happened in India after the general election in 2004 and due to the protest of Hindu nationalist parties against the Sonia Gandhi, on her party's decision to make her PM of the country, Manmohan Singh got the top job. He is working like a puppet. Now, it is happening in Pakistan and Gilani is ready to become another puppet PM in South Asia region.

Let the world see how the two wise men - Zardari and Nawaz Sharif - control the coalition affairs and how they control the influence of Musharraf in national politics. It will be more interesting to see how would Gilani fulfill his political fathers' dream to curtail Musharraf's wings.

I am just waiting to see the next move of President Musharraf in the wake of such happenings in Pakistani politics. Musharraf has intended to remain as president of the country for the five years, which is left in his term. Now, when his party has no majority in parliament, his powers will be drastically reduced in taking decisions. Next battle is waiting to begin in Pakistan...

What is the problem if Gillani has accepted the Prime Ministership in Pakistan. I don't see any problem in it and for 'Syed from Malaysia', Indian PM Manmohan Singh is not a puppet PM. He is free to take any important desicion in the national interest. Don't compare India's political situation with that of Pakistan.

Tough days ahead indeed for the new PM of Pakistan. The new PM will have to make him ready to face a difficult challenge to balance the domestic demand to set a dialogue with the extremists, militants with pressure coming from USA. He will definitely need to show a tougher approach to do the balance.

This country has lost its best political leader and people of Pakistan are in need to get support from India, the largest democracy in the world.

Zardari is trying to play everyone, the choice of Yousaf Raza Gilani is evident of the fact, what I fear is In 9-12 months these politicians will be fighting all out a lose alliance will be broken and Musharraf will be again incharge to do as he pleases, things are not looking good.

For our Pakistani brothers - this is a message from India - We do believe in democracy and we want you people to start believing in democracy. One thing I want to say here that in India we have no politician doing such acts. so, you people should condemn and forgive him because he is now your Prime Minister.

Muhammad Bhai, What Sujay said or projected may be his individual point of view. On the basis of such comments, we should not frame false conceptions in our minds; otherwise the gaps thus created would be next to impossible to bridge. Be it India or Pakistan, democracy should continue to exist and flourish. Amen.

As a Pakistani citizen I can accept that without the active support from India, it will be tough for Pakistani government to establish democratic institutions in the country. India should show helping attitude towards us and extend helping hands to waiting to be formed Pakistani government.
