Remembering Benazir

Today marks the 55th birth anniversary of slain PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, whose assassination in December last year left the world shocked.

How do we remember Benazir? As the young girl who was not allowed to be present at her father’s funeral, and then spent years in jail and then exile? The sister, who saw two of her brothers killed in mysterious circumstances? The daughter, whose mother now suffers from Alzheimer’s after having suffered the loss of two sons and a husband? As the charismatic politician, who dazzled the media and world leaders with her eloquence, and the masses with her fiery speeches and promises? As the woman who broke down in tears after returning to her homeland after nine years in exile? As the embattled leader, who resorted to US and UK sponsored deals to return to the country without the shadow of corruption charges hanging over her head? Or maybe as the brave woman, who was assassinated in front of hundreds of people?

On her 55th birthday, there are many things one can say about Benazir, both bitter and beautiful. But despite it all, one thing is for sure: Pakistan will never give birth to such a leader again.

Happy Birthday Ms. Bhutto.

She should be remembered as a woman who had guts to come and tell all the male chauvinist Muslim fundamentalist that their hypocrisy can't be tolerated. One who really loved the country and wanted to bring it back on the right track of democracy and freedom.

Beautifully summed up the multi-facet personality of a politician in a country in Indian sub-continent. But I cannot agree with the last sentence that Pakistan will never give birth to such a leader again. You don’t know what is store in the future of a country, an organisation or an individual.

How important was Benazir for Pakistan? The answer today is going to be a huge YES. Roll back time when she was facing all sorts of graft charges along with her husband. She was a much loathed person then.

It is quite surprising to see that Indians have shown overwhelming sympathy towards her death. We forget that Pakistan violated the letter and spirit of the Shimla Agreement that her father signed following Pakistan's defeat in the 1971 war. His father once remarked that Pakistan would fight a 1000 years if needed be to 'liberate' Kashmir from India and Benazir herself was a very vocal and logistical supporter of Kashmiri terrorists whom she called freedom fighters.

Benazir, like all other democratic politicians, said and did what could have helped her stay in power or come back to power. And we all know that politics is dirty which is a different matter altogether. As Huma says, there are many bitter and beautiful things to say about her... In spite of her misgivings she atleast pretended and maybe tried to work for the cause of democracy and against fundamentalism... She did not deserve the horrible death...

Benazir is a woman of wit and grace. Being a woman is not a hindrance to lead Pakistan. She is an epitome of great strength and power in her time. She will always be remembered in history.

Well, she was a great woman but a greater politician, who knew all the tricks of the game. I had read an interview and since then I do not view her with greatness. Nonetheless, it is no good to talk ill about the dead, hence I would not comment anything on her wrong deeds. Of course, she was a woman of will and strength. May her soul rest in peace.
